That's not much of a plan, really, now that I see it in writing.
OK, so what I'm going to do is release a short (7,500 - 8,000 word) story each month, except for April and November (Script Frenzy and NaNoWriMo). You'll be able to buy the stories for Kindle at 91p a pop (plus VAT, taxes, etc.) or from Lulu.com at £1.29, with US dollar and Euro prices at the relevant exchange rates. I'm starting with epub format, but if there's enough (any) interest, I'm happy to try out more formats.
At the end of each year of writing, I'll put together a printed anthology of all the stories, with some added extras (stories that were too short to sell, unreleased stuff, etc). I also hope to distribute the book in electronic format along with the print version. That just seems fair to me.
Here's the first list of goals that I'm setting for myself:
- Sell 10 stories.
- Sell 25 stories.
- Sell 50 stories.
- Sell 100 stories.
- Get a royalty cheque from Amazon US.
- Get a royalty cheque from Amazon EU.
- Cover 25% of the monthly mortgage payment.
- Cover 50% of the monthly mortgage payment.
- Cover 75% of the monthly mortgage payment.
- Cover the monthly mortgage payment.
I'd like to give a shout-out to Joel Watson at Hijinks Ensue (http://www.hijinksensue.com/), whose Experiment is inspiring me to give this a go. Go read his webcomic and buy the books and merch. You’ll be glad you did. If you’re a creative geek, read his “Digital Age” Artist’s Manifesto and give it a go yourself.
