"Her words trailed off. She leaned over and gave him a swift kiss on the cheek. "Just remember, Col. We have all the time in the world."

She opened the door and got out, heels grinding into the gravel. She walked towards the stall, not looking back. Colin watched her go, confused by her sudden professing of their eternal love. A nagging thought bounced around in the back of his mind. No one talked like that in real life. They loved picking out the tropes and cliches in their favourite television shows and he knew full well that whenever someone said, "we have all the time in the world", it was guaranteed that they didn't, and didn't have much time left to boot.

Tyres screeched on the dry tarmac. His head shot round and he saw a four-by-four barrelling towards him, out of control. He jabbed his thumb into the seatbelt button, but the expected click and release of the belt didn't happen. He glanced down, but before the panic could set in, the car smashed into the side of the convertible, lifting it onto the passenger-side wheels. He heard the engine roar, tipping the car further onto its side. His weight pressed into the belt as he pushed the button on the seatbelt holder. It wouldn't unfasten.

Gravel ground into the side of the car, inches from Colin's head. He grabbed at the steering wheel and pulled himself flat against the seats, the centre console pressing into his stomach. With a long, shrieking scream of sheared metal, the convertible tipped and crashed onto its roof, crushing the safety barrier under its weight. The momentum tilted the car over the barrier, threatening to send it tumbling onto the rocks below. Colin hung on, the drop dipping into view. Now the panic set in.

The windscreen had been pressed downwards, the top of the barrier cracking the glass along the centre. There was a gap of a few inches between the torn, twisted metal and Colin. The car rocked back and forth, grinding the barrier against the car. If it didn't tip over the edge, the barrier would soon cut into him.

He tugged at the belt and pressed the button, hoping that the impact had jarred it loose, but it still held tight. He wriggled, trying to slip out of the belt, but the movement made the car slide, sending it an inch or two closer to the tipping point. He stayed still, waiting for the car to stabilise."
